Lent begins next Wednesday
It is a penitential season of prayer, self-denial and helping others. In this way the whole Church prepares for Easter with those who are to be baptised.
- Catholics are obliged to receive holy communion at least once a year between Ash Wednesday and Trinity Sunday.
- Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence for those who have completed their eighteenth year, until the beginning of their sixtieth year; the law of abstinence binds those who have completed their fourteenth year.
As we enter into Lent, let us all be mindful of the journey that we will be undertaking during this time. During Lent, there will be no entrance hymn or final hymn. You will also notice that the Sanctuary will be bare of flowers and these will be replaced weekly by symbols which are placed there to signify the weekly readings. You will also notice that the Holy Water is taken away and the ciborium is covered with a purple cloth to signify the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ in the desert.
There will be no opening or final hymn. Fr Jeronimo and the servers of the mass will enter in silence, the commentator will make a brief introduction and will ask the congregation to kneel. Fr Jeronimo will move forward dressed only in his Alb and Stole and will kneel in front of the Altar. He will then collect the Chasuble from his chair and will robe. There will be no invitation to the congregation to welcome each other, again this is to encourage us to prepare in the silence of the moment for Lent.
Commencing on Friday 16th February at 7pm there will be Stations of the Cross in the church each
Friday throughout Lent.
Ash Wednesday Mass Times
Wednesday, 14 February at 9.00am and 7.00pm at St Peter’s church.
There will also be a Mass at St Peter’s school undercover area at 9.45am on that day.
A Workshop for Acolytes and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion is scheduled for
Monday, 26 February at 7pm in the church. This is very important and we urge members of
these Ministries to attend.
A Workshop for Readers/Commentators will be advertised shortly.
The first Children’s Liturgy session at the 8.30am Mass was held last week with a great turn-out of
We will continue for first term to ensure that the Mass time suits young families, and re-assess at the end of term.
This re-commenced last Thursday after 9am Mass and was followed by Benediction at 6.30pm.
All are welcome to come each Thursday and sit with the Lord in prayerful contemplation.
